WHY MEDIATION WORKS!
March 18, 2021 ♦ 12 Noon – 1:30 pm EST ♦ Powered via Zoom

Guest Speaker
David W. Ichel

Confronting a reinsurance industry that has not yet embraced mediation as a solution, mediator David W. Ichel will discuss with our group why mediation really works, how it works in his cases, how Zoom has transformed the world of mediation to an even better place, how to solve a mediation impasse and then open the floor for discussion as to why there has not been greater use of mediation in reinsurance disputes.

David W. Ichel of X-Dispute LLC  is a mediator and arbitrator of complex commercial disputes and also serves as a court-appointed Special Master. He retired on December 31, 2015 from Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP (New York), where he was one of the founders of the Simpson Thacher insurance practice and litigated a broad range of large-scale commercial litigation and advised corporate, association and individual clients for 37 years from 1978-2015. He also teaches Complex Civil Litigation at Duke Law School and the University of Miami Law School.  David is on the Mediation and Arbitration rosters of ARIAS-US, AAA, ICDR, Federal Arbitration, Inc., the CPR International Institute for Conflict Prevention & Resolution, and the ICC/USCIB.  He is also a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (FCIArb) and has been appointed to serve on numerous ad hoc arbitration tribunals. COULD POLITICAL RISK BE THE NEXT SOURCE OF CAT LOSS INFLATION?
June 9, 2021 ♦ 12 Noon – 1:30 pm (EST) ♦ Powered by Zoom

Presenter:
Thomas Johansmeyer, Head of PCS – a Verisk Company

PCS has noted the phenomenon that catastrophe losses seem to be getting larger and more frequent.  Mr. Johansmeyer will discuss PCS’s observations that in recent years political risk indicators, such as post-event legal and regulatory actions, have played a factor which has, and likely will, impact future insurer/reinsurer risk and capital management decisions.

The number of catastrophe events  designated by PCS®, a Verisk business™, in the United States has reached record-setting territory every year for the past five years. And the number of events reaching an industrywide loss threshold of at least US$1 billion has reached record levels in 3 of the last 4 years.

Tom Johansmeyer runs PCS, a Verisk business.  Under his leadership, PCS has expanded from North America to Japan and Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Turkey.  Tom also launched PCS’s foray into global cyber, marine and energy, terror, and large property risk losses.  Before PCS, Tom held re/insurance industry roles at Guy Carpenter and Deloitte.
