IRUA’s Reinsurance Basic Syllabus Program
In 2021, the IRUA introduced “Syllabus Program” aimed at those who have just entered or who have only a few years of experience in the industry. It is intended to be a “Reinsurance Primer Series” of twelve basic topics to be offered on a rolling 2-year cycle. The first 6 topics are marked with an asterisk* and are listed in green.
A Certificate will be awarded to those participants who complete 10 out of 12 topics listed.

This is a casual education and networking group comprised mostly of attorneys, arbitrators, consultants and company claims-related people. IRUA handles all the administration and works with the organizer to arrange in-person meetings which until the COVID-19 pandemic were held several times per year. For 2023, we will again resume in-person meetings.

This webinar, presented by Joseph Carney, is geared to all levels of experience in conducting casualty underwriting audits of ceding companies. Topics include pre-audit preparation, key areas of focus during the audit and wrap up strategies.
Mr. Carney is a highly experienced former casualty treaty underwriting executive who has conducted many such audits during his career. Prior to forming JEC Consultants, Inc. he served as Chief Casualty Underwriting Officer for a major U.S. reinsurer and recently concluded a multi-year consulting assignment providing underwriting expertise to an offshore assuming reinsurer. He has an exemplary record of building underwriting teams and managing substantial portfolios at such major reinsurers as Swiss Re, North Star, Prudential, Folksamerica and latterly, Gerling Global Re. He continues to offer consulting services on reinsurance underwriting and underwriting audits as well as an emphasis on providing expert litigation support to law firms engaged in dispute resolution matters. He is an experienced ARIAS-US certified arbitrator and has served as umpire or party appointed arbitrator in over a dozen matters.

PROPERTY UNDERWRITING FOR NON-PROPERTY PROFESSIONALS*

Just in time for renewal season, this webinar will give non-property professionals an overview of property underwriting. It will explore property exposures and how to differentiate by construction, occupancy and protection. The session will also address covered perils and the basics of a property policy form. This session will discuss MFL and PML concepts as we look into what amounts we expect to lose on a per risk basis, on a per occurrence basis and in the aggregate. It will also touch on pricing and accumulation aspects on a high-level basis. Our presenter is Christiane Gross, Senior Vice President at Munich Re in Princeton, NJ who is a Property Underwriting Team Lead for Facultative and Programs.

In this webinar, Duane Hynes of Holborn Corporation will review the various forms of reinsurance, including net and gross quota share and surplus treaties in proportional reinsurance, and Risk XL, Cat XL and Agg XL treaties in non-proportional reinsurance. He will discuss why ceding companies buy these reinsurance structures as well as the differences between facultative and treaty.
